For the second recruiting cycle in a row, Wisconsin is set to sign two scholarship quarterbacks in the same class.
Friday, three-star junior Chase Wolf announced his commitment to the Badgers. He joins fellow three-star Ben Bryant, who pledged to UW last December.
Prior to the 2017 class, Wisconsin signed two quarterbacks in the same year just twice since 2002. In a perfect world, the staff would take one QB in each class, but the transition from Gary Andersen to Paul Chryst, or, more specifically, from a dual-threat to pro-style preference, created depth issues at the position.
The quote is a bit dated, but former head coach Bret Bielema talked about his recruiting philosophy at quarterback after being forced to sign graduate transfers Russell Wilson and Danny O'Brien in consecutive years. This was due to James Stallons' departure from the program in 2009, Curt Phillips' chronic knee problems and Jon Budmayr's nerve damage in his right elbow
"I made a conscientious decision my first year: We were going to sign one quarterback and one tailback every year," Bielema said in March of 2012. "Obviously, the predicament you get in is if you have two quarterbacks … that didn't work out because of injuries and one, James Stallons, because he flunked out."
On the heels of Wolf's commitment, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look back at Wisconsin's quarterback recruiting since 2012 - specifically at the classes that featured two prospects at the position.
Class of 2004
Sean Lewis, a three-star prospect from Illinois, chose Wisconsin over offers from Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue. When he arrived on campus, though, he grew into an in-line tight end and finished his career at that position.
Bryan Savage was more heavily recruited out of high school and the former three-star prospect was listed on Wisconsin's depth chart during his career. But the standout from Pennsylvania transferred to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas and later wound up at Hofstra.
Luckily for the Badgers during this time, John Stocco was a three-year starter and Tyler Donovan followed him for one season during his redshirt senior season.
Class of 2015
This recruiting class was started by Gary Andersen but finished off by Paul Chryst. Austin Kafentzis, an undersized dual-threat option, represented Andersen's spread philosophy. Alex Hornibrook, the definition of a pocket passer, came over with Chryst from Pittsburgh. And it's no surprise how this unfolded.
Both enrolled early and took part in spring camp of 2015. From the start, it was clear Hornibrook had better command of the position and he quickly separated from Kafentzis. That summer, the former standout from Utah announced his intentions to transfer. After stops at Nevada and Arizona Western College, Kafentzis is set to enroll at BYU this summer.
Class of 2017
The quarterback situation in 2017 was a bit more untraditional. Jack Coan was told he would be Wisconsin's only scholarship quarterback in his class. That held true right up until Signing Day, when it was announced that Danny Vanden Boom, who originally accepted a preferred walk-on offer, would be bumped up to a full-scholarship athlete beginning in the spring 2018. Coan recently took part in his first spring camp and could be UW's No. 2 quarterback behind Alex Hornibrook in 2017.
