Positional recruit snapshot: 2019 safeties

Over the next two weeks, BadgerBlitz.com will be bringing you snapshots for each recruited position, covering the targets who are legitimate prospects on Wisconsin's board in the 2019 class. We will discuss the candidates who are most interested in the Badgers, as well as those who are considered long shots to commit to UW.

As always, this is just a snapshot in time and things remain fluid. Additional offered targets will appear over the next few months and some recruits will inevitably choose other colleges.

Today, we conclude our series with a look at the safeties.

Senior safeties Joe Ferguson and Natrell Jamerson just played their final game at Wisconsin, and the Badgers will have to find a replacement to play opposite of redshirt junior starter D'Cota Dixon in 2018. Patrick Johnson, Eric Burrell, Evan Bondoc, Seth Currens and Scott Nelson will all be in competition for that job this spring and fall. Eight is a pretty healthy number for scholarship players at the position, so the Badgers, who signed Reggie Pearson in the 2018 class, may look to take as many as three safeties in 2019.

Ty DeArman is one to watch at safety heading into the spring. The do-it-all athlete (plays QB, WR, CB and FS) from Bowie High School in Texas was offered by Wisconsin in November and visited Madison that same month.

"The game itself at Wisconsin really stood out to me because it wasn't like any of the other games I've been to in Texas," DeArman told BadgerBlitz.com. "The TCU, UT and Baylor games weren't anything like the Wisconsin game.

"I loved everything about but it's too early to talk about favorites right now."

In addition to DeArman, the Badgers are battling with some of the top programs in the country for Lewis Cine, who is from the same high school as senior defensive back Lubern Figaro.

"One of my friends, Lubern Figaro, goes there and is from here (Massachusetts)," Cine told BadgerBlitz.com. "Just from watching him play and seeing the environment there is crazy, especially Jump Around. I just want to be there for a game and meet the staff.

"Lubern tells me that in this recruiting process, there are the real and the fakes. Wisconsin is the realist when it comes to being honest and when it comes to the family feeling. I completely trust him and what his opinions of Wisconsin are."

A few other notes on targeted safeties:

*Khalid Martin played at the same high school as current freshman cornerback Madison Cone.

*Bryson Shaw is from the same school (Bullis in Maryland) that produced current safety Patrick Johnson.

*Litchfield Ajavon has Wisconsin in his top seven, along with Notre Dame, Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Michigan and Penn State.

*Jalyn Phillips, Cam'Ron Kelly, Jalani Williams and Moses Douglass also have known offers from the Badgers in the 2019 class.

Who else came off the board?

Four-star Brendan Gant has an offer from Wisconsin but is currently committed to Alabama.
