With Wisconsin sitting on 10 scholarship commitments and four preferred walk-ons in the 2017 class, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look at what's left to accomplish in the current cycle.

QUARTERBACK

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take two quarterbacks in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers have a commitment from four-star Jack Coan, as well as preferred walk-on Danny Vanden Boom, who is expected to go on scholarship early in his career art UW.

Scholarships seniors: Bart Houston

Top target(s) in 2018: Jack Tuttle, Artur Sitkowski and Ben Bryant

What's next? Wisconsin essentially landed a "Tier 1" recruit at quarterback, as head coach Paul Chryst made four early offers at the position and connected on Jack Coan, a four-star prospect from New York.

A 6-foot-4, 190-pound Rivals250 quarterback, Coan, who visited this past weekend unofficially, committed to the Badgers in late March and became the fifth overall prospect to join the class at that time. The No. 11 pro-style signal caller in the country had well over double-digit offers, but in the end picked UW over Nebraska and Northwestern.

"I really like the way Coan fits into Wisconsin's scheme," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Adam Friedman said. "He has gotten much stronger over the past year and has really filled out his frame. Coan is also much more athletic and much tougher than people give him credit for. He could end up being classified as a dual-threat quarterback before all is said and done.

"As a passer, Coan has good arm strength and is very accurate with the football. I like his quick release and ability to throw his receiver open. Coan also has a high football IQ and he should be able to pick up the offense very quickly."

In addition to Coan, Wisconsin picked up a big in-state pledge from Kimberly's Danny Vanden Boom, who will begin his career in Madison as a preferred walk-on.

"I'll be a preferred walk-on for the first semester and then in January of 2018 they'll have a scholarship for me," Vanden Boom told BadgerBlitz.com. "I camped with Wisconsin a few weekends back and things went very well. We started in the classroom, breaking down some film and drawing plays up on the whiteboard. Then we went outside to throw some routes and it was a good workout.

"To conclude, coach Chryst and coach (Jon) Budmayr expressed their interest in me and encouraged me to find the right fit. I feel like I have found that in Wisconsin."

The arrival of Coan (will enroll early) and Vanden Boom will be huge for the Badgers, which recently went through spring camp with two healthy scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

RUNNING BACK

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take one scholarship running back in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers do not have a commitment from a scholarship running back, but do have a pledge from preferred walk-on Hunter Johnson.

Preferred walk-on target: Seth Wilson

Scholarships seniors: Corey Clement, Dare Ogunbowale

Top 2018 target(s): Justus Woods

What's next? After rushing for 2,365 yards on 207 carries with 45 total touchdowns as a junior, Hunter Johnson, a first-team all-state performer last fall, accepted a preferred walk-on offer from the Badgers over an offer from Western Illinois.

"For some it may have been hard to turn down scholarship money, but for me there was no other school I wanted to attend and nothing else was as appealing," Johnson told BadgerBlitz.com. "I grew up a Badger fan and I used to watch the games on Saturdays and imagine myself out on the field in red and white scoring that big-time touchdown or making a game-changing play.

"Ever since I was a kid it's been my No. 1 goal."

Despite his commitment to Rutgers, Wisconsin has caught Jonathan Taylor's attention and the three-star back plans to take an official visit this fall. He could very well be the most realistic option at this point in the summer.

“I'm looking to meet all of the staff, interact with some of the players mainly," Taylor told Rivals.com. "It's a great opportunity that was presented from a great program to go check out their campus. The Wisconsin staff tells me that they would love to get me up to campus and see what they have to offer.

“For the most part, but I am willing to look into new opportunities that may come."

Kennedy Brooks, a four-star back from Texas, is also a strong option, though he has kept his recruitment very quiet this summer. The 6-foot, 197-pound prospect has offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Michigan and Kansas State, among others.

Finally, the staff hasn't given up on four-star A.J. Dillon, who is currently committed to Michigan.

Wisconsin an easy choice for in-state running back Hunter Johnson

WIDE RECEIVERS

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take two, possibly three, wide receivers in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers already have a commitment from Texas wide out Cade Green, as well as Deron Harrell, a greyshirt signee from last February.

Preferred walk-on target: Zach Clayton

Scholarships seniors: Rob Wheelwright, Reggie Love

Top 2018 target(s): Julian Major and Kamryn Babb, among others

What's next? Three-star wide receiver Cade Green committed to Wisconsin in late March, a quick recruitment from start to finish for the standout from Lake Travis High School in Texas. Position coach Ted Gilmore offered roughly two weeks prior to Green's pledge, which happened during an unofficial visit.

"Coach Gilmore really just wanted me to be myself during the visit and they wanted to see if I was a good fit for them," Green told BadgerBlitz.com. "I had a really good time with them and I thought all the coaches were awesome.

"Coach (Paul) Chryst was surprised when I told him about the commitment but he was really excited. He told all the other other coaches and they were all happy."

A two-star prospect in the 2016 class, Deron Harrell signed with Wisconsin in February as a projected cornerback.

But when the 6-foot-3, 180-pound athlete arrives on campus in January, he'll work at wide receiver.

"About two months ago I talked to (recruiting coordinator) coach (Andrew) Marlatt and he said the plan was now for me to come in as a receiver and see how that goes," Harrell told BadgerBlitz.com. "I was honestly excited. I played wide receiver my freshman year and a little bit of my junior year, so I feel confident playing the position.

"Whatever position they want or need me at is where I am willing to play."

Three-star Oliver Martin remains a target, though Wisconsin's momentum has faded in his recruitment. And Gilmore has stayed in contact with TCU commit Kenedy Snell, who is looking to use all five of his official visits.

TIGHT END

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take one tight end in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers already have a commitment from three-star tight end Jake Ferguson.

Preferred walk-on target: Caiden Haake

Scholarships seniors: Eric Steffes

Top 2018 target(s): Trenton Gillison and Jeremy Ruckert

What's next? Ferguson was the first in-state athlete in the 2018 class Wisconsin extended a scholarship to. And in late March, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound projected tight end from Madison Memorial committed to the Badgers.

"I think he’s always felt comfortable there. He’s been fortunate enough to have a lot more access than most recruits because of his connections with the school," Ferguson's head coach at Madison Memorial, Adam Smith, told BadgerBlitz.com. "I think there was some family pressure – not that it was the ultimate decision-making factor – but he never leaned toward Wisconsin, which I was very happy about.

"He always had an open mind. What it did come down to was the comfort level and the opportunity to play with his brother, which he was never able to do. The school itself was big and the academic path they put out there for him and where he wants to go in life. He also feels like with what Wisconsin can offer, there’s a chance to get him to the next level, especially with what they do with tight ends. He’s going to be a hell of a football player for them."

The three-star prospect, who recently performed well at The Opening Finals (Nike) event in Oregon, is the only scholarship tight end the Badgers will take in this cycle.

OFFENSIVE LINE

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take four offensive linemen in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers already have commitments from Kayden Lyles,Logan Bruss, Alex Fenton and Tyler Beach.

Preferred walk-on target: Josh Seltzner

Scholarships seniors: Dan Voltz

Top 2018 target(s): Jackson Carman

What's next? Four-star offensive lineman Kayden Lyles got Wisconsin's 2017 recruiting class off to a great start when he committed to the Badgers last September. Lyles' older brother, Kare', is a freshman quarterback at Wisconsin and his father, Kevin, played at UW from rom 1993-1996 alongside current offensive coordinator coordinator Joe Rudolph.

"I think he's (Kayden Lyles) really natural on offense," Saguaro head coach Jason Mohns told BadgerBlitz.com. "He's played tackle for us all three years of high school going back to the second game of his freshman year. He plays tackle because it's a position of need for us, but he's more of a center or guard at the next level. For a while he was all offensive line, but then he tried some defense and he was really doing well. So I think he was kind of 50/50 on where he wanted to play, but he's gravitating back towards the offensive side.

"He's still really young and I think he can play anywhere and things could change. I think playing under coach Rudolph and the comfort level there is big for Kayden and will help him have success there."

In-state standouts Logan Bruss and Alex Fenton, commits No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, pledged to the Badgers after picking up offers during Wisconsin's junior day in February.

"He (Fenton) was basically recruited by all the Big Ten schools," Menomonie High School head coach Joe LaBuda told BadgerBlitz.com. "He's not about all the attention and putting everything out there, but a host of Big Ten schools were after him.

"He basically narrowed it down to Michigan and Wisconsin and then made his decision."

Four-star tackle Tyler Beach completed the unit when he pledged to Wisconsin in early April. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound senior chose UW over offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Arkansas and a handful of other schools.

"There’s such a huge upside for Tyler because he’s so young right now, he’s just 16 years old," Bunyan said. "He has the ability to still grow and they saw his work ethic and the type of person he is. He’s good in the classroom and well respected amongst his peers and teachers. Tyler’s always got a smile on his face and he’s a positive kid. I think Wisconsin and all the other schools saw the total package.

"He’s got great feet and comes off the ball real well to finish blocks. He does a great job of getting to the second level and locking up with linebackers. We run a little bit of a wing-T-based blocking scheme and he does some tremendous things that way. I just think his initial burst and first step, along with how he finishes blocks, was the reason why he was so heavily recruited."

With four commitments in the bag, position coach Joe Rudolph is done on the offensive line.

DEFENSIVE LINE

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take one defensive lineman in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers already have a commitment from three-star defensive end Aaron Vopal. Additionally, in-state tackle Matt Henningsen accepted a preferred walk-on offer from UW.

Preferred walk-on target: Michael Balistreri

Scholarships seniors: None

Top 2018 target(s): Taron Vincent, Aidan Hutchinson and Devin O'Rourke, among others

What's next? After picking up an offer at Wisconsin's junior day, Aaron Vopal committed to the Badgers in late January and became the second pledge in the 2017 class. A 6-foot-8, 280-pound prospect, Vopal will begin as a defensive end in UW's 3-4 scheme.

"I think he could play on either side of the ball," Chad Michalkiewicz, Vopal's coach at De Pere High School, told BadgerBlitz.com. "With his basketball background, he competes on a very good AAU team and also for a good varsity team here at school since his freshman year. He has exceptional foot speed and hip movement; great lateral movement. So you couple that with frame, he's going to be able to carry his weight better than your average 6-foot-6 kid.

"Offensive line sounds like a no-brainer because of his height and the prototypical big body up front that Wisconsin's known for, but I think when you peel the layers back and look at what he can do laterally and with his explosion and wing span, he projects very well at defensive end. Will he eclipse 300 pounds? I don't know, but I definitely see him playing at 290 pounds and maintaining that athletic ability. He's going to be a big boy and he'll carry that weight really well."

The staff also received a huge commitment from in-state lineman Matt Henningsen, who turned down scholarship money from Buffalo, Illinois State, North Dakota, Northern Illinois and South Dakota in order to walk on at Wisconsin. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound senior from Menomonee Falls will begin as a defensive tackle for the Badgers.

"My parents and three older brothers all went to Wisconsin and it has been a dream of mine to go to Wisconsin since I was five years old," Henningsen told BadgerBlitz.com. "After visiting many times in the fall and then being there for a visit this past Friday, I knew it was the place for me because of the tradition, fantastic academic opportunities and people within the program.

"Honestly, it was a lot to think about and consider. I had many choices of scholarships to very successful football programs, but whenever I am in Madison, it feels like home. So, almost immediately after the visit on Friday, I knew that Wisconsin is where I want to spend the next chapter of my life."

Wisconsin is likely done on the defensive line in 2017, scholarship-wise.

LINEBACKERS

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take one or two linebackers in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers have a commitment from projected outside linebacker Izayah Green-May, as well as preferred walk-on Jake Collinsworth, an inside linebacker who could also work at fullback.

Scholarships seniors: Vince Biegel

Top 2018 target(s): Reggie Jennings, Andrew Chatfield, DeAndre Square and Jack Sirmon, among others

What's next? Wisconsin hit on arguably its top target at outside linebacker in three-star prospect Izayah Green-May. The Illinois standout visited Madison four times this year, most recently for the spring game in April which led to his commitment.

"Wisconsin is just a great place. From the football programs to the academics along with the whole atmosphere and fan support, Wisconsin just offers everything I was looking for in a school," Green-May told BadgerBlitz.com. "I had some great visits to Wisconsin and I get along great with the coaches and the players.

"On Saturday (spring game) I had a chance to talk to some of the players and they just filled me in on some of the day-to-day things at Wisconsin. Everyone was very honest and straight with me, which I appreciated. I just feel at home at Wisconsin and my mom and my family are totally on board with my decision."

A first-team all-conference linebacker as a junior, Jake Collinsworth committed to Wisconsin after camping and visiting unofficially this summer.

"It was a great time," Collinsworth told BadgerBlitz.com. "They brought in a player panel of former walk-ons so we could get more information about what it meant to be one. It was awesome to tour and get to know the campus and the facilities Wisconsin has. It was clear that Wisconsin would provide me with the opportunities to be the best player I can be.

"I knew Wisconsin was the right place for me because the coaches made sure we knew walk-ons are not treated any different than scholarship kids. They give everybody the opportunity to work hard, and I feel like working hard is what I do best."

The Badgers recently missed on arguably their top remaining target at the position when James Houston committed to Florida. Navy commit Griffin Baumoel is someone to watch this fall if the staff wants to add another player to the position.

SAFETIES

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take one safety in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers do not have a commitment from a projected safety.

Scholarships seniors: Leo Musso

Top 2018 target(s): Reggie Pearson (committed), Trent Ingalls and Dallas Craddieth

What's next? Safety isn't a huge need in the 2017 class, but Wisconsin is currently in the top 5 for three-star senior Scott Nelson. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect is focused on the Big Ten, with UW, Penn State, Michigan State, Iowa and Northwestern still alive in his recruitment.

“Everyone really is equal for me right now,” Nelson told Rivals.com. “I took visits to Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin around the end of June. Once I take this visit to Penn State, hopefully I can then visit Michigan State and begin to narrow this all down a little more. A decision before my season would be ideal.”

CORNERBACKS

How many will they take? Wisconsin is expected to take three cornerbacks in the 2017 class.

Who do they already have? The Badgers already have a commitment from Ke'Shan Pennamon, a member from the 2016 class who is now at a prep school, as well as three-star Madison Cone.

Scholarships seniors: Sojourn Shelton, Serge Trezy

Top 2018 target(s): Montrae Braswell and Keondrae Miller, among others

What's next? Ke'Shan Pennamon, a three-star prospect from Florida, signed with Wisconsin in February but will instead enroll this fall at Palmetto Prep in South Carolina. The plan for Pennamon is to enroll at UW in January, essentially making him part of the 2017 cycle.

Madison Cone's situation is much more traditional. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound senior from East Forsyth High School in North Carolina committed to the Badgers in April over offers from Boston College, Duke, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, among others.

"He's a three-year starter for us with 21 interceptions over the last three years," Cone's head football coach, Todd Willert, told BadgerBlitz.com. "That's pretty incredible and he's one of those guys who just understands where the football is and it's really just something you can't coach.

"He understands the game and he understands situational stuff, so it's like having an extension of the coach on the field. Wisconsin's going to get a very smart football player."

The staff is also keeping tabs on a few other cornerbacks, such as Richmond commit Markus Vinson and Christian Cumber, who just picked up a scholarship.
