Spitz, 6-foot-1 and 245 pounds, will graduate this spring from Whitney Young Magnet High School, where he earned three football and two baseball letters.
A two-year team captain for the football team, Spitz was a two-way starter and three-time all-conference selection. He earned all-city and all-Public League honors in 2007 as he led his team to the best record (9-0) in school history.
Spitz was coached by Tim Franken at Whitney Young, where he was a six-time "Principal's Scholar" and seven-time honor roll student. Spitz also was a starting pitcher with the varsity baseball team as a freshman and sophomore.
Royston leaves
Kim Royston, who was heading into his junior year with the Badger football team, has chosen to leave the program, Bielema announced Thursday.
"I know Kim wanted to be in a starting role for us, but that wasn't the position he was in at this time," Bielema said. "I wish him the best."
