Wisconsin is offer No. 1 for 2024 PG Daniel Freitag

Daniel Freitag had a smile on his face all the way from Wisconsin back home to his home in Minnesota on Wednesday evening.

The rising sophomore point guard picked up an offer from the Badgers after the team's advanced camp, the first for Freitag during his recruiting process.

"I was extremely surprised," Freitag told BadgerBlitz.com. "When they took me down into the locker room, I thought they were just going to show me the cool walls and trophies. I had no idea they were going to offer me a scholarship.

"If you ask either of the coaches that were there they would tell you that I had a smiley-surprised expression on my face when they broke the news. And 24 hours later, I'm still kind of in shock."

Freitag, 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, is the first prospect head coach Greg Gard has offered in the 2024 class. The two, along with assistant Joe Krabbenhoft, were able to speak about the scholarship and UW's interest level after the camp.

"Towards the end of the camp, Coach Krabbenhoft and Coach Gard took me to the locker room," Freitag said. "They talked about how they enjoyed seeing me play and how they think I fit the point guard style of play at Wisconsin. They also mentioned multiple times how much they like the person I am outside of basketball and how they like my personality. And that's when they broke the incredible news.

"The camp was very enjoyable. It was fun but they kept us working hard and learning new things. It was an opportunity that not many kids get to experience, so I'm beyond thankful that the coaching staff allowed me to attend. I felt confident throughout the entire camp, which helped my play. It was definitely some of the best basketball I've played recently."

A member of the Howard Pulley AAU program, Freitag, from Jefferson High School, is feeling good about Wisconsin early in the process.

"I've always been a fan of Wisconsin and the Packers, but after going to the camp and seeing the environment there and that at-home feeling they give you, they have peaked my interest greatly," he said. "'I'd love to come to a game or visit with the family sometime."

Freitag, who is also expected to develop into a Division 1 football prospect, is hearing from the basketball staffs at Minnesota, Utah, Saint Thomas and Sioux Falls.

"I believe my basketball and football skills/potential are about equal," he said.
