Notes...

Defensive line: Keep an eye on Alec James, who could push both Conor Sheehy and Chikwe Obasih at end. Sheehy (6-foot-4, 288 pounds) could also play inside, if needed, in certain packages.

Linebackers: With T.J. Edwards out indefinitely with a leg injury, we expect Chris Orr and Jack Cichy to open as starters inside. Vince Biegel flips spots on the outside to make room for T.J. Watt, who is entering his first fall as a projected starter.

Defensive backs: Safety is far from determined, but Leo Musso and D'Cota Dixon took a lot of first-team reps this spring. They'll be pushed by Joe Ferguon and Arrington Farrar. Derrick Tindal, the No. 3 cornerback in 2015, is penciled in as a starter opposite Sojourn Shelton at cornerback.

Punter: Scholarship punter Anthony Lotti is expected to win the job as a true freshman. He'll likely be challenged by walk-on P.J. Rosowski, who has some game experience.
