With Signing Day quickly approaching, BadgerBlitz.com will take a look back at the top five prospects Wisconsin has signed at each position during the Rivals.com era (since 2004).

Today, we start with the quarterbacks, where some of the Badgers' most successful players - Joel Stave, Scott Tolzien and transfer Russell Wilson - were not highly ranked coming out of high school.

1A Curt Phillips (Rivals rating of 5.8)

Breakdown: Curt Phillips, who chose Wisconsin over offers from Duke, Kentucky and East Carolina, among others, was supposed to be the quarterback of the future for UW in the 2008 class. The former four-star prospect from Tennessee, for his career, had 5,418 passing yards, 3,788 rushing yards and 115 career touchdowns (64 rushing, 51 passing), and expectations were through the roof prior to his arrival in Madison.

Phillips redshirted in 2008 and played in five games the following year. But knee injuries/surgeries kept him from playing in 2010 and 2011, and Phillips was never the same after. He was granted a sixth season of eligibility and earned his third letter in 2013, playing in three games. Overall, it's amazing Phillips bounced back from ACL injures so many times and was able to finish a playing career with the Badgers.

1B Jack Coan (5.8)

Breakdown: Wisconsin essentially landed a "Tier 1" recruit at quarterback in the 2017 class, as head coach Paul Chryst made four early offers at the position and connected on Jack Coan, a four-star prospect from New York.

A 6-foot-4, 190-pound Rivals250 quarterback, Coan committed to the Badgers in late March and will arrive on campus this month as an early enrollee. The No. 12 pro-style signal caller in the country had well over double-digit offers, but in the end picked UW over Nebraska and Northwestern.

1C D.J. Gillins (5.8)

Breakdown: A four-star quarterback from Florida, D.J. Gillins was the dual-threat talent then-head coach Gary Andersen was looking for at the position. But when Paul Chryst took over the program early in his career at UW, Gillins, who chose the Badgers over Boston College, Arizona and Georgia Tech, among others, made a switch to receiver and later transferred from the program. Gillins is not at SMU.

2A Sean Lewis (5.7)

Breakdown: Out of high school, Sean Lewis picked Wisconsin over scholarships from Iowa, Northwestern and Purdue. A four-year player for the Badgers, Lewis moved from quarterback to tight end and was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection at UW. He is now the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Syracuse.

2B Jon Budmayr (5.7)

Breakdown: Injuries derailed Jon Budmayr's career at Wisconsin before it ever got started. But in the 2009 class, the three-star prospect from Illinois was a huge get for the Badgers. During his recruitment, Budmayr had offers from Notre Dame, Northwestern, Illinois, Arizona and Nebraska but committed to UW in May of 2008. He is currently on Paul Chryst's staff at Wisconsin in an offensive quality control role.

2C Bart Houston (5.7)

Breakdown: A standout from powerhouse De La Salle in California, Bart Houston, who was recruited by then-offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, picked Wisconsin overs offers from UCLA, Washington, Arizona and Colorado, among others. Reunited once again with Chryst, Houston went out on a high note as a senior after leading the Badgers to a Cotton Bowl win over Western Michigan.
