Three-star DB Scott Nelson adds his name to Wisconsin's 2017 class

Wisconsin has added what could be its final piece in the 2017 recruiting class.

Monday afternoon, three-star safety Scott Nelson gave his commitment to the Badgers, becoming pledge No. 16 in the current cycle.

"Wisconsin had everything that I wanted in a school," Nelson told Rivals.com. "They have a great football program with a staff that isn't going to leave anytime soon. They have great academics where I can get a great education, and they also have a great campus.

"It was the best overall that fit for me."

A 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior, Nelson, from University of Detroit Jesuit High in Michigan, chose UW over offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Penn State and Northwestern, among others.

Nelson, who is the first scholarship safety for UW in this class, took his official visit to Wisconsin in late October.

"They were the leader recently and the more I had encounters with the school and coaching staff, the more I knew it was the place for me," Nelson said. "It feels good to be done and to have picked a great school where I know I'll have a great experience and be able to become successful."

When Nelson, who was recruited by assistant coaches Mickey Turner and Jim Leonhard, arrives on campus, he'll compete for time with fellow scholarship safeties Joe Ferguson, Arrington Farrar, D'Cota Dixon, Patrick Johnson, Seth Currens and Eric Burrell.

"They are recruiting me for safety right now and I think that coach (Jim) Leonhard can make me a much better player and I'm very excited for that," Nelson said. "It did have a little effect on it but all the coaches at schools are great.

"The coaches told me how happy they were and how excited they were to get me. Coach Leonhard said he can't wait to coach me and get to know me more."
