Matthias nabs spring game offer

Zac Matthias was one of over 40 football prospects on hand this past Saturday to watch the University of Wisconsin's Spring Game at Camp Randall Stadium.
Monday night, BadgerBlitz.com caught up with the 6-foot-5, 292-pound offensive tackle to discuss his trip to Madison, as well as his official scholarship offer from head coach Bret Bielema.

"We got there at about 10:30 a.m. Coach Bielema took me to his office and offered me a scholarship right away," said the Hemlock, Mich., prospect. "After that, I had chance to speak with their coaches. I talked to Coach (Bob) Bostad, the offensive line coach, as well as their head strength and conditioning coach.
"Then we had a chance to watch the spring game, which was good. After the spring game we went into the field house, ate some dinner and went home."
With Henry Mason still recovering from a spinal cord injury, current wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander has been busy in parts of the Midwest, particularly Michigan, trying to make new in-roads in his recruiting territory.
"Well, my recruiting coach is Coach Alexander," Matthias said. "I think he's a really nice guy, we had a chance to talk a lot during the spring game and he actually stopped by my school again this morning (Monday). He just started his recruiting trip, so I think we have a really good relationship."
When selecting a university, Matthias is focused on two things: academics and football.
"I guess I'm looking for a good football program and academics are important, as well. But pretty much all Division I institutions have a good academic program for what I'm looking for, which is engineering," he said. "I would like the school to be in the Midwest, but not too close to home."
Born and raised in Michigan, it isn't a shock to hear Matthias speak highly of both in-state schools.
"Well, I grew up a Michigan fan and I would really like an offer from Michigan," said Matthias, who also has offers from Central and Western Michigan. "I haven't been in contact with them as much as other schools. I'll be going up to a camp their on June 8. That's where I'll get my most exposure to them and I'll see if they like me.
"I also plan on attending the Michigan State senior camp and well as the Nike camp on May 9 in Columbus, OH."
College football fans can expect a decision from the multi-talented lineman sometime this summer.
"I would like to make my decision before my senior season starts," he said. "I would say by August."
