With National Signing Day quickly approaching, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look back at Wisconsin's quarterback recruiting over the last five years during Paul Chryst's tenure.

CLASS OF 2017

With Jon Budmyar handling the bulk of the quarterback recruiting work, Wisconsin landed an early commitment from top target Jack Coan. The four-star prospect chose UW over offers from Boston College, Miami (FL), Michigan, Nebraska and Northwestern, among others.

That summer, the staff also added Danny Vanden Boom as a preferred walk-on, but the in-state standout was put on full scholarship just before Signing Day. Vanden Boom, a UW legacy, led Kimberly to back-to-back Division 1 state championships and 28-0 record as starting quarterback.

Coan, who led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl last season, has played in 25 games with 18 starts at quarterback. A foot injury forced him to miss all three games so far this fall.

CLASS OF 2018

Wisconsin actually accepted an early pledge from Ben Bryant, and for a period of time both he and Chase Wolf were on UW's commit list. Soon after Wolf's announcement, though, Bryant and the Badgers had a controversial breakup in May of 2017. He later signed with Cincinnati.

Nate Carter, who threw for over 2,200 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior at Waunakee, was added late as a preferred walk-on. He switched to tight end after one year with the team and is no longer with the program.

Wolf, a redshirt sophomore, has played in four games during his career at Wisconsin.

CLASS OF 2019

Budmayr hit on Graham Mertz early in the process and the Badgers never looked back. The staff, though, had to fight off just about every top school in the country for most of the spring and summer before the four-star prospect signed in December of 2019.

As Wisconsin's starting quarterback this fall, Mertz has completed 55 of 84 passes for 587 yards and eight touchdowns.

CLASS OF 2020

After missing on Tyler Van Dyke (Miami), Parker McQuarrie (UCLA) and Max Johnson (LSU), the Badgers elected not to take a scholarship quarterback in this cycle. They did, however, add Daniel Wright as a preferred walk-on.

CLASS OF 2021

Wisconsin was the the first school to offer Deacon Hill, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect from Santa Barbara High School in California. The recruiting process didn't last long, though, as Hill committed roughly two months later in June of 2019. The No. 21 pro-style QB in the country is set to sign during the early period in December.

Quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy (Michigan), Jake Rubley (Kansas State), Ty Thompson (Oregon), Sawyer Robertson (Mississippi State) and Behren Morton (Texas Tech) also has scholarships from Wisconsin in this class.

EARLY LOOK AT 2022

The two quarterbacks Wisconsin offered in 2022 - Brady Allen (Fort Branch, IN) and Devin Brown (Queen Creek, AZ) - committed to Purdue and USC, respectively. Without on-campus visits and opportunities for live evaluations, Budmayr does not appear to be in any hurry to extend Wisconsin's next scholarship at the position.
