Luke Fickell’s first on-field coaching staff at Wisconsin is almost complete.
Greg Scruggs, who spent this past season as the assistant defensive line coach with the New York Jets, is expected to take over the same position - minus the assistant title - with the Badgers.
BadgerBlitz.com, which mentioned Scruggs as a strong possibility earlier this month, confirmed Pro Football Scoops’ report on Thursday.
Scruggs coached under Fickell with the Bearcats in 2020 and 2021. Cincinnati ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense (16.5) and No. 10 in total defense (318.4) in 2021. The Bearcats racked up 39 sacks that year, good for No. 2 in the AAC and No. 18 in the nation.
Prior to his on-field role, Scruggs spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons as the Bearcats’ director of player development and NFL liaison.
Scruggs played collegiately at the University of Louisville and was selected in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. A former standout at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Scruggs should bring strong recruiting ties in the state of Ohio.
Scruggs joins a defensive staff that currently includes Mike Tressel (coordinator/inside linebackers), Collin Hitschler (safeties) and Paul Haynes (cornerbacks). Fickell is still expected to hire an outside linebackers coach to join the group.
