Wisconsin adds 17 scholarship players on National Signing Day
MADISON, Wis. - National Signing Day has been about as drama-free as possible for the Wisconsin Badgers, who received signatures from 11 scholarship players (seven already signed as early enrollees) and several other preferred walk-ons to fill out their 2017 recruiting class on Wednesday morning.
UW's newest signees will join a large group of early enrollees who are already on campus with the Badgers: quarterback Jack Coan, cornerback Madison Cone, outside linebacker Izayah Green-May, wide receiver Deron Harrell, cornerback Faion Hicks, offensive lineman Kayden Lyles, and outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.
Of the players who signed on Tuesday, four-star running back Jonathan Taylor is the top-rated prospect. A 5-foot-10, 201-pound athlete from New Jersey, Taylor will add to a talented running back group in 2017 and try to follow in the footsteps of other New Jersey tailbacks who had success in Madison - like Ron Dayne and Corey Clement.
Scott Nelson, a three-star safety from Detroit, was the first prospect to send in his National Letter of Intent to the Badgers this morning, and they had a flurry of signatures roll in after 7 a.m., CST, when the majority of their signing class could send in their letters of intent.
In-state products Logan Bruss (Kimberly), Tyler Beach (Port Washington), Jake Ferguson (Madison Memorial), Alex Fenton (Menomonie), and Aaron Vopal (De Pere) all signed their National Letter of Intent to play for the Badgers, and the Badgers also added a pair of wide receiver products from Texas in Cade Green and Emmet Perry, and a scholarship long snapper in Adam Bay.
The lone signing day surprise seemed to come when the Badgers announced Danny Vanden Boom as a scholarship player, instead of as a preferred walk-on. But the in-state quarterback prospect told BadgerBlitz.com that he will be a preferred walk-on for his first semester with the team, and will go on scholarship in January of 2018. Vanden Boom was always expected to receive a scholarship early on in his career at UW, so overall this doesn't change Wisconsin's scholarship calculus.
The Badgers do have a chance to add one more player to their signing class before the day is over. Four-star wide receiver and Rivals100 prospect Danny Davis will announce his decision this afternoon, and the Badgers are reasonably confident that he will choose Wisconsin over others from Kentucky and West Virginia, among others.
