MADISON, Wis. – The No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers (12-1, 9-0) might not be heading to the College Football Playoff after their loss to Ohio State, but they received a nice consolation prize on Sunday afternoon: a bid to the Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30, where they will take on the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (10-2, 7-1), the ACC’s runner-up.

“The Orange Bowl has a tremendous history and I know we will be treated in a first-class manner," head coach Paul Chryst said in a release. "Miami is a really good team and our guys are really excited for the opportunity to play such a high quality opponent.”

It’s Wisconsin’s second bid to a New Year’s Six bowl game in as many seasons, following last year’s win over Western Michigan in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. The Badgers will be looking to preserve a three-year bowl winning streak, which dates back to their overtime win over Auburn in the 2015 Outback Bowl.

It will be the first time the Badgers have appeared in the Orange Bowl, and the second time they have played Miami in a bowl game. Their last matchup came in 2009, when the Badgers beat the Hurricanes 20-14 in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. But this time the Badgers will be taking on the Hurricanes at their home stadium, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The Hurricanes are 7-0 at home this season, including wins over then-No. 13 Virginia Tech and then-No. 3 Notre Dame.

But Chryst said on the Orange Bowl teleconference that his team is more focused on the opportunity to play in another major bowl game, and not on where they will square off with the Hurricanes.

"I think more important than where it is, it is the opportunity," Chryst said Sunday. "It is the opportunity to play against a great Miami team."

"Our kids, they know it will be a challenge."

The Badgers will be playing a bowl game for the 16th consecutive year, and are 5-5 in their previous 10 Florida bowl games. Wisconsin’s all-time series with Miami is tied 2-2.
