2019 OL Joe Tippmann had a commitment plan prior to UW visit

The Wisconsin Badgers added another piece to their 2019 recruiting class Saturday night when 2019 offensive tackle Joe Tippmann announced his commitment to UW on his Twitter account.

Tippmann, a 6-foot-6, 283-pound prospect from Fort Wayne, Ind., is the fifth player to commit to Wisconsin's 2019 class and the second offensive tackle, along with four-star offensive lineman Logan Brown.

Tippmann committed to Wisconsin on a visit to the UW campus, one of several trips to Madison he had made during the recruiting process. And while Tippmann’s commitment seemed to come out of the blue, he told BadgerBlitz.com that he’d been planning on making his decision for a while.

"Yes, I was planning on committing," Tippmann told BadgerBlitz.com. “Getting to talk to the coaches again sealed the deal.”

Tippmann, a three-star junior, said the coaching staff was glad to hear about his early decision.

“The coaches and myself were all super excited when I told them and they told me they were super pumped about the commitment,” Tippmann said. "Nothing really stuck out to me today, really, because I’ve already been up there to see everything. But it really was cool to get to watch them practice."

When asked what made Wisconsin the right fit for him, Tippmann said it came down to feeling that UW was the right place for him.

“Since camp last summer I knew Wisconsin was something special," he said. "They had a great staff and from then on it just felt right. The coaches did not say a specific number about how many linemen they want to take in this class, but some of the players I talked to said they think they are only taking a few."

Tippmann chose UW over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa and Purdue, among others, with strong interest coming from Notre Dame and Northwestern.

"I really do not plan on going on other visits," Tippmann said.
