Maryland Notes

For the first time since February 2010, the Terrapins will play on Super Bowl Sunday. Overall, the program boasts a 5-5 record when playing on Super Bowl Sunday but more importantly, the team hopes to snap a three-game losing streak of its own when the Badgers come to visit.

“There’s a lot of fight in this team,” Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said. “Considering the circumstances, I think we’re pretty confident. I think we believe in each other. It’s just putting a complete game together."

The Terps' most recent performance, a 75-67 loss to No. 3 Purdue on Wednesday night, was Maryland's second-straight single-digit loss against a ranked opponent. In short, it was another competitive showing that the team couldn't close out.

Like Wisconsin, Maryland is experiencing its share of injuries, which has hurt the team's depth and scoring.

The team has been struggling to find production without forwards Justin Jackson and Ivan Bender, both of whom had recent season-ending surgeries. However, freshman Darryl Morsell (9.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.0 apg) will need to be one of many defensive contributors because Maryland will be without center Michal Cekovsky, which leaves a gaping hole on defense when UW junior Ethan Happ works in the post.

He’s a talented individual,” Morsell said of Happ on Saturday. “As a team, we have to slow him down. That’s really what it is."

Wisconsin Notes

The 2017-18 season has been one to forget in Madison, Wisconsin.

As head coach Greg Gard tries to navigate the UW program through its worst season in arguably two decades, he hopes to recapture the magic from Wisconsin's last trip to Maryland, which can be found below.

Perhaps this flashback, along with Wisconsin's 27-9 record in February the last five years, brings hope for a team desperately searching for a win to regain some confidence back.

"You’ve got to keep the faith. You’ve got to have confidence," UW freshman Brad Davison said after the team's 60-52 loss to Northwestern. "When you lose the faith and you get discouraged, that’s when it gets tough. We’re not going to do that."

Keeping the faith is an important lesson the Badgers must take away from their rather-disappointing season both now and moving forward. The team's array of freshmen have accounted for 34.9 percent of the team's scoring this season. Additionally, just 20 of the 351 teams in the country average a younger roster.

Although many may not recognize it now, Gard emphasizes his young players continue to work hard, despite the frustrating results.

"As we’ve struggled to continue to grow and mature, this group has constantly come back the next day ready to go. I have not had to light a fire, any of that type of stuff," Gard said on Thursday. "They have come ready to work and they understand there’s a lot of areas that we’ve got to mature and grow and get better at."

One to watch closely Sunday will be Happ, the only player to rank among the Big Ten's top-10 in points, rebounds and assists.
