After Wisconsin's first 13-win season in program history, BadgerBlitz.com takes a look at how the depth chart could look in 2018 come spring camp.
Note: These projections do not take into account current injuries and do not reflect an official release from Wisconsin. Take a look at the projected scholarship distribution for more information on the future roster, as well as the projected spring depth chart.
Quarterbacks
The skinny: The entire quarterback room - Alex Hornibrook, Jack Coan, Kare' Lyles and Danny Vanden Boom - returns this spring. And after he completed 23 of 34 passes for 258 yards and four touchdowns against Miami in the Orange Bowl, Hornibrook likely silenced some of his doubters ... until the spring, at least.
Keep an eye on: Jack Coan - Can the former four-star prospect make a serious run at the starting job this off-season? Legit competition would benefit both him and Hornibrook.
Coming this summer: Chase Wolf, Nate Carter (walk-on)
Running backs
The skinny: Tailback (at least on paper) will be deep once again in 2018 with Jonathan Taylor, Bradrick Shaw, Chris James and Garrett Groshek all returning. The status of Taiwan Deal and Sam Brodner, both of whom missed all of the 2017 season with injuries, remains uncertain, though.
At fullback, Alec Ingold will replace veteran starter Austin Ramesh in 2018. Behind him is a bit of a question mark, and it wouldn't be surprising to see a reserve linebacker or tight end move to the position this spring.
Keep an eye on: Jonathan Taylor - There will be big-time Heisman Trophy buzz surrounding the standout sophomore in 2018, but don't expect him to be tackled during spring camp.
Coming this summer: Nakia Watson, Brady Schipper (walk-on)
Tight ends
The skinny: It will be difficult to replace senior Troy Fumagalli, but Zander Neuville and Kyle Penniston should be a nice one-two punch at the position in 2018. Behind them, both Luke Benzschawel and Jake Ferguson have big off-seasons ahead of them.
Keep an eye on: Jake Ferguson - Expectations are sky-high for the offensive scout player of the year in 2017.
Coming this summer: Jaylan Franklin, Cormac Sampson, Jack Eschenbach (walk-on)
Wide receivers
The skinny: Wisconsin should have its most talented receiver group in recent years ready to go in 2018. Danny Davis, A.J. Taylor and Kendric Pryor all stepped up after starter Quintez Cephus went down with a season-ending leg injury this fall. That quartet, along with a potential Heisman candidate in the backfield, should give Hornibrook plenty of weapons to work with next fall.
Keep an eye on: Cade Green - With Wisconsin's top four pretty well established, can the redshirt freshman challenge for time with Cephus likely sidelined this spring?
Coming this spring: Taj Mustapha, Aron Cruickshank
Coming this summer: A.J. Abbott, Isaac Guerendo
Offensive linemen
The skinny: Wisconsin will be loaded on the offensive line, especially if Michael Deiter returns for his final season. Should that happen, it's very likely he bumps back inside from left tackle. That, however, will depend largely on Cole Van Lanen's ability to take over at the all-important position on the offensive line. Coach Joe Rudolph will likely have at least 10 players he feels good about at the start of spring camp. Quite a transformation from just a few years ago when the Badgers had almost zero depth.
Keep an eye on: Cole Van Lanen - The former four-star prospect could emerge as a starter at left tackle in 2018, a move that would allow Deiter to move back to the interior.
Coming this summer: Michael Furtney, Andrew Lyons (walk-on)
Defensive linemen
The skinny: This will certainly be the position group to watch this spring. Gone are multi-year contributors Chikwe Obaish, Alec James and Conor Sheehy, and coach Inoke Breckterfield will have to replace two starting ends in 2018. It will be interesting to see if Garrett Rand stays inside behind starter Olive Sagapolu or moves to the outside to compete for a starting job. Isaiahh Loudermilk is likely penciled in at one starting spot, but the rest of the group is unproven behind him.
Keep an eye on: Garret Rand - Will he stay at nose guard, where he's a bit undersized, or move to end?
Coming this spring: Bryson Williams
Coming this summer: Boyd Dietzen, Isaiah Mullens
Linebackers
The skinny: Wisconsin will be deep inside, especially if T.J. Edwards returns for his final season. On the outside, the Badgers need to find a new coach (Tim Tibesar is headed to Oregon State) and two new starters. Andrew Van Ginkel, who was great in the Orange Bowl, will open with the No. 1 defense. But opposite him is a question mark with Tyler Johnson, Zack Baun (injured all of 2017) and Christian Bell all competing for time.
Keep an eye on: Christian Bell - It will be a huge off-season for the Alabama transfer, who is competing for a starting job on the outside.
Coming this summer: Mason Platter, Jack Sanborn, CJ Goetz, Marty Strey (walk-on), John Chenal (walk-on)
Cornerbacks
The skinny: Wisconsin will have to replace its two starting corners in 2018 after Nick Nelson announced his intentions to enter the NFL Draft. Donte Carriere-Williams, who was UW's No. 3 option in 2017, will likely open camp as a starter. Competition behind him will be wide open with Madison Cone, Caesar Williams, Faion Hicks and 2018 early enrollee Donte Burton battling for time.
Keep an eye on: Donte Carriere-Williams - Is the redshirt sophomore ready to be the leader of the cornerbacks' room?
Coming this spring: Donte Burton
Coming this summer: Alex Smith, Travian Blaylock
Safeties
The skinny: Patrick Johnson, the most likely candidate to replace Natrell Jameron at free safety, missed all of 2017 with an injury. That could open the door for several young players to make a move to start opposite veteran D'Cota Dixon in 2018. Freshman Scott Nelson was the defensive scout player of the year this fall and could find himself in the two-deep at some point during camp.
Keep an eye on: Eric Burrell - With Johnson likely out this spring, Burrell should get a lot of run with the No. 1 unit.
Coming this spring: Reggie Pearson
Special teams
The skinny: Wisconsin returns its whole special teams unit, with the exception of punt returner Nick Nelson and kick returner Derrick Tindal.
Keep an eye on: Aron Cruickshank - With the kicking and punting jobs in tact, will the true freshman/early enrollee make an the impact in the return game?
Coming this summer: None
