Commitment 101: Isaiah Mullens

The Wisconsin Badgers added three-star defensive end Isaiah Mullens to their 2018 recruiting class Tuesday and filled what is likely the final opening at the position in this cycle. Here's what Mullens' commitment means for head coach Paul Chryst moving forward.

At 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, Mullens fits the prototype for what position coach Inoke Breckterfield is looking for at defensive end. In the last two classes, Wisconsin has signed Isaiahh Loudermilk (currently listed at 6-foot-7 and 296 pounds) and Aaron Vopal (6-foot-8 and 280 pounds), and Mullens fits right into that body-type on the strong-side.

According to Harvest Prep (Ohio) head coach Milan Smith, Mullens is a two-way standout who can play multiple spots on the defensive line.

"What most coaches see is that Isaiah is a big, strong kid who can play north, south, east and west," Smith told BadgerBlitz.com. "He’s a huge kid with a wide range of abilities. He can move inside at the one-technique and outside to the three- or five-tech. So there’s a lot to like about him on the field.

"He’s 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, and that’s just rare to see in a kid with his athleticism. He’s a 200-meter sprinter on our relay team for track, so he’s just a unique combination of size and athletic ability. He’s very strong - plus-400 pounds on the bench press. He plays two ways for us and about 175 snaps a game, so he’s never coming off the field. Hid conditioning is really high and he works hard at it."

On film, Mullens is stout against the run and can take on multiple blockers. He doesn't have the ideal "bend" some elite edge players possess, but he'll be able to get into the backfield if he continues to develop his technique.
