Wisconsin adds Cincinnati transfer WR Quincy Burroughs

First-year position coach Mike Brown will now be reunited with two of his former receivers from Cincinnati.

Hours after Will Pauling's commitment to the Badgers on Tuesday evening, Quincy Burroughs announced his intentions to transfer to UW on Wednesday afternoon.

"Coming from Cincinnati, we were two of the younger guys," Burroughs told BadgerBlitz.com. "We were always close, we always worked out together, we trained together, we talked football a lot and it was cool.

"He entered the portal a little bit before me. When he made the decision me and him, we talked about it a lot. We talked about entering the portal hopefully with the opportunity to see Wisconsin. With our coaches being there, we got to see what it was."

The redshirt freshman visited Madison last weekend. During that trip, Burroughs, 6-foot-2 and 202 pounds, met with the entire offensive coaching staff, a group that included coordinator Phil Longo and tight ends coach Gino Guidugli, as well as head coach Luke Fickell.

"They are great coaches," Burroughs said. "I can speak for Coach Brown first, I want to say he’s one of the better wide receiver coaches in college football. If you look at it he hasn’t been around very, very long, but I think in a few years he’ll definitely be a household name. Coach Brown is a great coach, so being able to be coached by him is great. But then you also think about a guy like Coach Longo that has implemented systems at several schools and has been successful. He’s coached guys along the likes of DK Metcalf, he had Van Jefferson at Ole Miss, he had A.J. Brown and these are guys that were not only great in college football but were able to translate it to the next level as well. I believe that it brings excitement in itself.

"Speaking for Coach Gino, he's great guy. He’s someone you can easily relate with. He’s a cool guy, he recruits very well and he’s just a great guy to be around, as well as the rest of the staff. Coach Longo’s vision, as well as Coach Fickell’s, he likes to win and he’s going to do what it takes to win, so he’s going to coach you to win. Wisconsin has a rich tradition, a tradition of winning, so I believe he wants to lift that tradition and bring it to the standard it’s supposed to be at. All the coaches."

Burroughs is excited to play with the three transfer portal quarterbacks Wisconsin has received commitments from this winter.

"I’d be lying if I said it didn’t," Burroughs said when asked if the buzz excites him. "You got guys like Tanner Mordecai, who is a (Davey O'Brien) semi finalist for two years in a row. That man threw for 4,000 yards almost, and then you have Nick Evers, who was a top quarterback in the 2021 class, which we all know he can throw the football very well. Then you have the defensive end they got today and the 2023 class in which they did a pretty good job. That speaks to Coach Fickell and his staff being able to all keep those all commits that and the guys he got at Cincinnati.

"I think it’s big. I think I love the direction Wisconsin is going in and I’m excited to see where Wisconsin is going from this point on."

The coaches let Burroughs know they're trying to build a title contender in Madison. He joins a wide receiver that returns Chimere Dike, Skyler Bell, Keontez Lewis, Dean Engram and Markus Allen, in addition to Pauling.

"We’re trying to be able to compete with Ohio State, compete for a Big Ten championship, year in and year out," Burroughs said. "We’re trying to make it to the college football playoff and win a national championship, I know for myself and that’s something they expressed. Basically just compete for a Big Ten championship, year in and year out.

"I know in the past Wisconsin and Ohio State have battled back and forth. Just basically trying to retain that spot of being a big-time competitor in the Big Ten conference."
