Lance Evans Talks About Visit To Wisconsin

IW: How did you like your visit?
Evans: It was great. I really liked it a lot.

IW: The week before, you went to Boston College. How was that?
Evans: It was good. But I really enjoyed Wisconsin.
IW: Would you say you liked Wisconsin more than Boston College?
Evans: Yeah, sure.
IW: In what areas was Wisconsin better?
Evans: Football wise, and the stadium, the way the crowd got into it, I loved it. It was just tremendous. And then walking out of the tunnel was just great. We were walking out, and everybody is cheering you on and everything. I just got the feeling that this is a great football town. Everybody gets behind the football team and I like that.
IW: What other schools are you going to visit?
Evans: I’m going to Virginia Dec. 1. They play Penn State.
IW: Do you have any other visits scheduled?
Evans: I have some tentative ones, but I’m not positive where I want to go. It’s a tentative schedule right now.
IW: Where are you tentatively scheduled to go?
Evans: Iowa on (Dec. 14), tentatively, and North Carolina but I don’t know if I’m going to take that one.
IW: Would you say those are your finalists?
Evans: Oh no. I’m taking visits that I really haven’t been out to or seen before. That’s not necessarily my top five, because I’ve been out to Penn State two times. I still might take a visit to Penn State and Rutgers, schools that I’ve seen.
IW: Will distance be a factor in your decision?
Evans: It’s always part of your decision, but it’s not as (important) as some other kids, where if a school is too far away they won’t go there. But it does come into play.
IW: How is your high school season going?
Evans: We’re 5-4 right now. We have one more game.
IW: How have you done individually?
Evans: I have something like 76 tackles and three interceptions.
IW: Do you play both ways?
Evans: I usually play sparingly on offense. I played a lot more last year than this year. But I play a little bit of wide receiver.
IW: Is Wisconsin recruiting you exclusively as a DB?
Evans: Yeah, they really want me at safety, either free or strong.
IW: What did you have a chance to do at Wisconsin?
Evans: I toured the campus, I talked to academic advisors and my host was Anthony Davis. I went out with him for a little bit. He’s a really nice guy.
IW: I talked to Will Blackmon and he said you guys got a kick out of the scooters.
Evans: Yeah, that was real funny. We saw all those scooters and I was surprised. I didn’t know how kids got around there. We saw everything there was to see there (on campus).
IW: Do you know what you want to study in college?
Evans: I’d say I’m 80 percent sure I want to study business.
IW: Would you say you have a list of favorites right now?
Evans: I’d say my top two are Penn State and Wisconsin.
IW: At this point, how would you compare Penn State and Wisconsin?
Evans: Similar, very similar. Both great schools, big stadiums, academic support and everything, I think both schools have top-notch programs. Then it comes down to where I fit in best in their program. Personnel-wise and coach-wise, things like that.
IW: Are you looking to play as early as possible? Is that a factor?
Evans: Yeah.
IW: What have you found out in that regard, talking to coaches and looking at depth charts?
Evans: Both schools I have a shot to play either my first year or my redshirt freshman year. It depends how I fit into their system. I really would like a redshirt year. Both schools, I have a chance to play. I think it comes down to what team I like, the guys I like the best and the recruiting class coming in.
IW: How have you had a chance to meet anybody from Penn State or Wisconsin’s recruiting class?
Evans: I haven’t met anybody from Wisconsin’s but I’ve met two kids from Penn State that have already committed. Then I know Wisconsin is recruiting some kids like Will (Blackmon), a lot of good players. He liked Wisconsin too.
IW: What are some of your best attributes on the field?
Evans: I think my size, and I like to get up in there. I’m not the kind of safety that likes to sit back and not help on the run. I love to help on the run, and you need that in the Big Ten.
IW: How big are you right now?
Evans: I’m 6-4, 195. I’m going to try to gain at least 10 pounds and drop my 40-time a little bit. But I know as soon as I get there I’m going to gain more and drop more on my 40 and gain some on my vertical. I run a 4.5 now. I know I’ll get much faster once I get in (a college) weight program.
