MADISON, Wis. - The Badgers made a splash on National Signing Day this past February when four-star wide receiver Danny Davis announced that he would join Wisconsin's 2017 signing class.
Now in his first camp with the Badgers, BadgerBlitz.com caught up with Davis to see how he's adjusting to his new team, where he's already started to get some reps with the second team offense.
Our questions and Davis' answers are included below.
How would you say your first camp is going now that you're up in Madison?
Danny Davis: Yeah I'm having a great time out there, jut playing with my guys, learning new things and putting it all together, just like coach Gilmore says. Just coming out here and giving all I've got, and that's what I've been doing. Just giving myself the best opportunity to play.
Did you expect to come in and compete for some playing time right away? Or did you have an idea of where you'd stack up?
Danny Davis: I didn't know what to expect, honestly. I wanted to come in here level-headed. It didn't matter how many stars I had because at the end of the day when you get to college all of that doesn't really matter at all. I just wanted to come out here, work had, show the coaches what I could do and just see what happens after that. That's why I just came in and worked hard in the weight room - I'm at 195 right now, was about 178 when I got here, so I gained about 14 or 15 pounds. That's what I tried to do - just get my body right, listen to coach Gilmore and apply it to the field.
You obviously announced your college choice on Signing Day this year - what was it about Wisconsin that made you pick the Badgers in the end? When did you know that you wanted to come to UW?
Danny Davis: I think it was when I took my official - that's when I really knew where I wanted to go. I came here, talked to the guys, and they said they love coach Chryst and it's a real team - everybody plays for each other and the whole organization is like "Live and Die Wisconsin." I loved that and I just wanted to put myself in that position.
What were those months like between Signing Day and when you officially arrived on campus? Were you excited to get up here after waiting for a bit?
Danny Davis: Heck yeah, I was really excited. I just wanted to make sure I was conditioned when I got here. I didn't want to be out of shape, so of course I ran some routes and caught some footballs. Just had some fun - I knew when I got here that time would be over. I relaxed a bit but at the same time I tried to work on my game.
Did they give you a plan to work on during that time or was it just 'Stay in shape, work on some basics and we'll figure it out when you get here'?
Danny Davis: Yeah, that's exactly what it was. Stay in shape, run some routes, just make sure you're not coming in here fat. I just made sure I was conditioned and let coach Kolodziej take my body over, because that dude is crazy.
Have you had any difficulty adjusting to college life and taking that step up to playing college football, too?
Danny Davis: I've just been studying a lot - we had some classes right when we came here and that was an adjustment, but I've been getting along with the playbook and studying all night and day. After fall camp I just go home and study, eat, study. That's the biggest thing, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. That and the speed of the college game. It's a little different, but I'm getting there.
Does that apply to adjusting to the college classroom, too?
Danny Davis: For sure, it's just organization for the most part. Organizing what you have to do. I was in English 100 so I had to organize all the papers I had to do with my football responsibilities and learning plays. I just had a strict schedule that I had to live by. You know in high school you don't really have to do that - I would say that's the biggest change.
Do you feel like you're getting to know the rest of the team and the other guys you came in with so far?
Danny Davis: Yeah, I love the guys, especially my freshman class. We have fun - play some guitar hero, go fishing. Me and Jack Coan, Cade Green, we went kayaking too. Just having fun and playing football - you've got to take the football seriously, but at the same time you've got to have some fun here in Madison.
Have you done enough to where you think you can avoid having to redshirt this year? Or would there be a benefit to having that year to work and get better?
Danny Davis: That's what I've been trying to work on but I'll let the coaches decide on that. If I have a chance to get on the field I'll get on there and try and make plays, but its up the coaches. I can't say that. I'm doing everything in my ability to play this year and contribute to this team.
