Dekker makes the cut

The USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee announced that Sam Dekker, a Wisconsin recruit in the 2012 class, made the first cut for the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team after five training sessions in Colorado Springs.

"Excited to represent USA in Brazil!!," Dekker posted on his Twitter account Thursday evening. "It's a tremendous honor!"

The 6-foot-8 forward from Sheboygan Lutheran was one of 23 players invited to the try-outs. The official 12-man roster will be selected prior to the team's June 12 departure for the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Sao SebastiŠo do Paraiso, Brazil.

"This trials has been very difficult," USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee chair Jim Boeheim said in a release. "You had 23 guys who all are really good players, there wasn't a bad player here. To get down to 12 is going to be difficult but I think we're going to end up with a really good athletic team that is going to be very well coached.

"I think we've got an unbelievable coaching staff. I think we've got guys that have won, been winners, won state championships, and I think they'll represent USA Basketball extremely well in this tournament."

Dekker averaged 35.2 points per game during his senior year and earned Wisconsin's Mr. Basketball award.
