Rivals/VTO Alabama: Defensive players to watch

MORE: Coverage | Camps filling up | Offensive preview

Saturday's Rivals.com/VTO Sports Alabama Elite 100 in Leeds will have a little bit of everything, from Rivals100 prospects to lesser-known players trying to put themselves on the map. Today, we take a look at some of the top defensive athletes expected to compete in the event.

Rivals.com/VTO Sports Alabama: Defensive Players to Watch
TERRIGNON BROWN, OLB, MEMPHIS (TENN.) WHITEHAVEN (2014)
Brown, who plays for one of the state's top programs, is thought to be among the better sophomores in Tennessee. He isn't extremely big, yet is effective largely because of his quickness, overall agility and instincts. Brown makes plays from sideline to sideline and shows nice explosive abilities. He has Division I potential.

ADAM COLLINS, ILB, MEMPHIS (TENN.) WHITEHAVEN
Collins is not one of the bigger inside backers out there, but he is a solid player who holds a Cincinnati offer. On film, he shows great instincts. In fact, he's always seemingly in the center of the action. Collins does an excellent job of locating ballcarriers, fighting off blocks and firing through his gaps to make a play.

A.J. GRAY, ILB, LEXINGTON (TENN.)
Gray isn't particularly tall, but he does pack 215 pounds onto his 5-foot-11 frame and is solidly built. On film, Gray appears to see the field well and can figure out the offensive play in a hurry. He does a good job moving laterally, fighting off blocks and making his way to the action.

FRANK HERRON, SDE, MEMPHIS (TENN.) CENTRAL
Herron is one of the South's most coveted prospects and for very good reason. He has offers from Arkansas, Clemson, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee, among others. First and foremost, Herron possesses excellent size. He's 6-5, 245 pounds. He's also pretty versatile. He is comfortable with or without his hand down.

ERIK HOLLIDAY, CB, BIRMINGHAM (ALA.) JACKSON-OLIN
Holliday is a player that has a good shot of ending up at a Division I school. He's a tall corner with excellent length, is smooth, runs well and has excellent hips. He does a very good job of sticking with his man, and has a good feel for when it's time to turn and make a play on the ball.

DEE LINER, SDE, MUSCLE SHOALS (ALA.)
An Auburn commit, Liner is a true top-tier talent. Right now, he is ranked No. 42 overall nationally and No. 4 among players at his position. Liner not only possesses a good frame, he is an exceptional overall athlete that displays solid footwork, keeps his pad level low, has great quickness and tremendous explosiveness. Another nice trait is his competitive nature. He truly wants to win every snap.

SKYLAR SHEFFIELD, DT, HENDERSON (TENN.) CHESTER COUNTY
Sheffield doesn't have any offers yet, but it may be just a matter of time before he does. In the coming weeks, he will visit both Tennessee and Vanderbilt, and there are other schools showing interest. The 6-2, 303-pound Sheffield is a bull in the middle and he seems to have good strength. For someone his size, he also possesses a relatively quick first step.

DARRIUS SIMS, CB, MEMPHIS (TENN.) WHITEHAVEN
Sims enters the event as the country's No. 29 cornerback, and there are some who think he should be higher on that list. Right now, he holds offers from Mississippi, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Sims was a second-team Army All-Combine performer in San Antonio earlier this year. A terrific all-around athlete, he is a true ball hawk in the secondary.
