Clay Cundiff, Jack Eschenbach not on the fall camp roster

PLATTEVILLE — The Wisconsin Badgers had question marks at tight end before fall training camp.

Now, as preseason practices are underway, they have even more.

The program released its fall roster on Wednesday as it started camp at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and it did not include tight ends Jack Eschenbach and Clay Cundiff. A UW spokesperson told reporters that both left the team “voluntarily.”

“I don't know what the plan is now,” coordinator Phil Long said on Tuesday when asked about Cundiff. “He hasn’t been in any practices in the spring. That’s a wait-and-see situation. He did some really nice things last year and he's very talented. I don't have much on him until we get deeper into camp.”

Last season, Cundiff caught nine passes for 142 yards with two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending leg injury in a Week 4 loss to Ohio State. In 2021, he caught three passes for 86 yards and a touchdown before suffering a dislocated ankle and a broken fibula in UW's eighth game.

Eschenbach, who played in 32 games at UW, has 19 collegiate receptions for 179 yards. Most of that production (14 catches for 120 yards) came last season, as his role in UW's offense expanded after Cundiff's injury.

UW's fall roster includes eight tight ends: Hayden Rucci (fifth-year senior), Jack Pugh (redshirt sophomore), Riley Nowakowski (redshirt junior), J.T. Seagraves (redshirt freshman), Cam Large (redshirt senior), Cole Dakovich (redshirt junior), Tucker Ashcraft (true freshman) and Angel Toombs (true freshman walk-on).

Cornerback Amaun Willams, linebacker Luna Larson, cornerback Lee Hutton and wide receiver Cole Toennies were the others off the roster.
