MADISON, Wis. - Despite having the Big Ten's leading rebounder and a senior laden front line, the Badgers lost the rebounding battle against Virginia at a 2:1 ratio, 36 to 18.
Virginia forwards Akil Mitchell and Darion Atkins combined to pull down 17 rebounds while Wisconsin center Jared Berggren only grabbed two, and the usually tenacious Mike Brusewitz had one rebound.
"They just kind of out toughed us they got the best of us tonight." Berggren said after the game. "We have to do a better job of playing with more toughness and more heart."
The second chance opportunities resulted in a number of made baskets for Virginia, including a big three point play which pushed the Virginia lead to eight with under five minutes to play.
"Those guys (Mitchell and Atkins) outta get stars like we got in Kindergarten." Bo Ryan said after the game. "Those guys played extremely well. I thought those guys willed their team to win."
The Badgers have been out-rebounded in all of their three losses this year.
