Danny O'Brien will be Wisconsin's week 1 starter against Northern Iowa, head coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday evening via Twitter.

O'Brien, who transferred to UW from Maryland this summer, beat out senior Curt Phillips and redshirt freshman Joel Stave for the right to start at quarterback on Sept. 1.

"Also had so many questions about our QB situation that want everyone to know we are going to start Danny O'Brien in our opener against UNI," Bielema tweeted.

The 6-foot-3, 223-pound junior passed for 29 touchdowns and over 4,000 yards during 17 starts at Maryland. He is coming off a solid week of fall camp where he separated from both Phillips and Stave.

"Both Curt and Joel had great camps as well," Bielema tweeted. "We are very fortunate that we have 3 QB's that can play winning football for us."

Bielema mentioned at the beginning of camp that he was planning on naming a starting quarterback 10 days before the Badgers' first game. That decision came a bit earlier than expected.

"I think we've just got to have somebody that manages that whole situation as best as possible," Bielema said after practice Saturday.
