Duckworth makes it official
In news that many anticipated for the past two weeks, Jeff Duckworth announced Tuesday his intentions to play for the Wisconsin Badgers after his senior season at Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After taking an unofficial visit to Madison this past weekend, the 6-foot, 194-pound wide receiver informed the Badger staff of his decision.
Last week, Duckworth noted he was "a Wisconsin Badger" according to the status section of his Facebook page, a social networking Web site.
When reached for comment, he said: "I technically haven't made an official decision yet. I'll make my official announcement after my visit to Wisconsin next weekend. As of now, it's still Wisconsin and Indiana. I'll be able to give you more information and my decision next weekend."
Duckworth selected Wisconsin over an offer from Indiana, though Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois and Miami-Ohio were showing strong interest of late.
This is the second recruit tight ends coach Joe Rudolph has secured in the current class. In late June, Rudolph, a former Badger offensive lineman, received a verbal commitment from Brian Wozniak, another player from the state of Ohio.
Duckworth becomes Wisconsin's 11th known verbal commitment, and first wide receiver prospect, in the 2009 class.
As a junior, Duckworth had 62 catches for 900 and seven touchdowns. With just one signature from a wide out in the 2008 recruiting class (T.J. Williams), it would appear Wisconsin could add another receiver in the current class, which is anticipated to have 16 or 17 available scholarships.
Here is a look at Wisconsin's current recruiting class:
QB: Jon Budmayr
RB: Montee Ball
TE: Brian Wozniak
WR: Jeff Duckworth
OL: Ryan Groy, Zac Matthias, Travis Frederick and Casey Dehn
DL: Jordan Kohout and Shelby Harris
ATH: Chris Borland
