Early Season Report Card: Defense

ScarletNation.com Defensive End George Johnson's play over the first three games has quieted rumors about his once-ailing back. Johnson has one interception and two sacks to his credit. Jamaal Westerman has made himself comfortable in opponents' backfield notching one sack and 11 tackles so far. Gary Watts has worked nicely into the rotation and also has a pair of tackles for a loss. Grade: B
Defensive Tackle Eric Foster has come out and done what is expected of him. Foster is fourth on the team in tackles with 20 and although he has yet to register a sack, Foster does have an interception. An ankle injury has forced Pete Tverdov out of the starter's role for the first three contests. Vantrise Studivant has stepped in for Tverdov. Studivant has 9 tackles, although none of those tackles were solo. Jamaal Westerman has also seen time at the tackle position when he slid down and started at tackle against Navy. Grade: C+
